What's in a N.S.W Deceased Estate Packet?Stamp duty was a direct tax on the estate of a deceased person. The Stamp Duties Office raised a file for every deceased person who died leaving taxable assets. Mostly, files contain documents relating to the assessment of the amount of stamp duty to be paid and are good for establishing land holdings. The number of documents in a file varies greatly. Deceased estates files are available for the period 1880-1958, although it must be remembered that these dates relate to the date of the administration of the estate. If a person died in December 1926, there may be no file until sometime in 1927 as the estate may have taken many months to administer. |
